Wounds from Radiotherapy.
Skin care and treatment of radiotherapy wounds with Flaminal®
Flaminal® and Flaminal® RT are advanced wound care dressings designed to effectively manage the complex skin reactions caused by radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation damages the hereditary material in the cell nuclei of the skin, leading to cell death during subsequent cell divisions. While symptoms may not be visible during the first few weeks, by the third week, patients often experience varying degrees of radiodermatitis.
Types of Radiodermatitis and Their Symptoms
Radiodermatitis can progress from mild redness and skin tightness to more severe conditions, such as moist desquamation with fluid exudate. As the condition worsens, symptoms like itching, soreness, and swelling become more intense. The stages of radiodermatitis are categorized as follows:
RTOG 1
- Faint or dull erythema
- Mild tightness of the skin
- Itching may occur
RTOG 2A
- Bright erythema
- Dry desquamation
- Sore, itchy and tight skin
RTOG 2B
- Patchy, moist desquamation
- Yellow or pale green exudate
- Soreness and oedema
RTOG3
- Confluent, moist desquamation
- Yellow or pale green exudate
- Soreness with oedema
Use of Flamigel® RT
Flamigel® RT is a hydro-active colloid gel, unlike typical moisturizers or emollients, that creates a protective barrier over the skin and supports regeneration during radiotherapy. When used from day 1 of radiotherapy, Flamigel® RT helps delay the onset and reduce the incidence of moist desquamation. It is particularly effective during the RTOG1 and RTOG2A phases.
Use of Flaminal®
Flaminal® provides an effective treatment for RTOG2B and RTOG3 dermatitis offering a gentle yet powerful approach to managing radiotherapy-induced wounds. Its advanced enzyme system helps to protect against infection, continuously debrides the wound, and absorbs excess exudate.
Flaminal® is an advanced wound dressing that supports faster wound healing and helps improve the quality of life for patients undergoing radiotherapy, particularly those with severe skin reactions such as bloody lesions.
